How we got here

It started in 1997, in a garage in Cape Town. Our Chairman and Founder, Steve Symes, saw that software would be the key to insurance efficiency and customer experience, and built an insurance administration system years ahead of its time. Nearly 30 years on, this is how it grew.

  1. Garage to first customer

    1997 to 2002

    • New beginnings: the original concept is designed in a garage office.
    • First customer: our "Customer of One" goes live.

  2. SKi goes live

    2002 to 2007

    • New name: the product is renamed SKi.
    • Going live: SKi goes live with its first insurer.
    • A new home: we open our first offices in Techno Park, Stellenbosch, and roll out our first nationwide product.
    • Johannesburg: we open our Johannesburg office.

  3. Going global

    2007 to 2012

    • Going global: our first multinational broker implementation.
    • South Africa coverage: a client goes live nationwide.
    • Migration: we help another national broker move five systems onto SKi.

  4. Blue chip, UK and Azure

    2012 to 2017

    • Blue chip: our first blue chip insurer goes live.
    • UK office: we launch our UK office.
    • Web API: we release our web API.
    • Recruitment and replatforming: the team grows past 80 people and we move deployment to Azure.

  5. London and capital

    2017 to 2022

    • London bound: our first people on the ground in the UK, and offices opened.
    • Expansion: our UK client base grows and we roll out further across Africa.
    • Capital investment: Frog Capital makes the largest investment ever in a South African founded InsurTech.

  6. A new brand and platform

    2022 to 2026

    • Brand refresh: we relaunch the Genasys brand.
    • New launch: a new cloud-hosted, feature-rich policy administration platform.
    • Named the #1 InsurTech: BusinessCloud has given us the title in 2024 and 2025.
    • Celent recognition: a Technology Standout in P&C Claims Systems and a Luminary for P&C Billing.
    • Technology Champion of the Year: our CEO, André Symes, wins at the Insurance Times Tech & Innovation Awards.
    • Insurance Simulator: a full simulation video game that grew out of an April Fools prank with Insurance Times.
    • A year of event firsts: our first BIBA Conference, headline sponsor of the MGAA Conference and our first ITC Vegas.

We have deployments across three continents and many locations within them. That range shows in the platform, which handles multiple currencies, regulators, languages and complex tax calculations.
